Jesus Heals by Danielle Hitchen

Jesus Heals by Danielle Hitchen is a board book about the healing ministry of Jesus for children. In the book, Hitchen retells the stories of healing found in the Gospels. There is a story for all the major parts of the body, head, ears, mouth, eyes, back, skin, legs, and body. She ends the book with the scripture found in 1 Peter 2:24. 

This is a very unique book. I don’t think I have ever seen a book about healing for children. And this one was very thorough. There are stories from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, including the raising of Lazarus from the dead. 

Mary fell at Jesus's feet and said, "Lord if you had been here, my brother would not have died." Jesus went to the tomb and said, "Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?...Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out."

The illustrations that go with each story are soft and beautiful.  Each illustration also demonstrates the healing of the individuals found in the stories.

I really liked this book.  I love hearing the stories about Jesus healing people.  It demonstrates the goodness of God and who he is.  He is Jehovah Rapha, the Lord who heals us.

I recommend this book for parents of children of any age. Hearing about Jesus is what produces faith, and it is wonderful to teach them these truths when they are small, so they will know who he is and what he has done and is still doing.

He Took Our Sicknesses

Imagine you are standing on a wooden box in the middle of a slave market.  And imagine you are covered with whatever illness you have in your body. Now imagine Jesus walks up and gets on the box in your place.  The disease leaves you and is transferred to Him.  You walk away completely clean, completely fresh, no disease of any kind, and paid for, no longer a slave.That is exactly what Jesus has done for us.  That is what happened at the cross.

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—-Galatians 3:13 (ESV)

This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.-Matthew 8:17 (ESV)

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.-1 Peter 2:24 (ESV)

Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds. -Isaiah 53:4-5 (HCSB)

31 Days of Healing: The Lord's Supper

And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.-1 Corinthians 11:24

This morning I am thinking about the Lord's Supper, which many of you are probably doing today, or have already done. There are two elements to the Lord's Supper, the bread and the wine. The wine represents Jesus' blood, which was shed for us and binds us to Him in a new covenant. The bread represents His body which was broken for us. When was it broken for us?

In Matthew 27, we are told that Pilate had Jesus scourged. When they scourged Him they took a whip that possibly had pieces of metal, bone, or glass, and beat him with it. This would have torn his flesh. So, what was this for? It was for our healing. 1 Peter 2:24 says, "By whose stripes you were healed." The definition of that word "stripes" indicates it came about by scourging.

We repeatedly see these two things together throughout scripture, forgiveness and healing. Jesus told the paralyzed man before he was healed that his sins were forgiven. In the Old Testament, it says that God "forgives all our sins and heals all our diseases." So, when the Lord commissioned us to partake of the Lord's Supper, it was not only for forgiveness of our sins, but healing of our physical bodies. Today, and everyday as we are partaking, may we remember and receive all He has done for us.
