He Took Our Sicknesses

Imagine you are standing on a wooden box in the middle of a slave market.  And imagine you are covered with whatever illness you have in your body. Now imagine Jesus walks up and gets on the box in your place.  The disease leaves you and is transferred to Him.  You walk away completely clean, completely fresh, no disease of any kind, and paid for, no longer a slave. That is exactly what Jesus has done for us.  That is what happened at the cross.

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—-Galatians 3:13 (ESV)

This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.-Matthew 8:17 (ESV)

He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.-1 Peter 2:24 (ESV)

Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses, and He carried our pains; but we in turn regarded Him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But He was pierced because of our transgressions, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on Him, and we are healed by His wounds. -Isaiah 53:4-5 (HCSB)
