Are You Washing Your Brother's Feet?

It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.
The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.
He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”
Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”
Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”
“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”
Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.
When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them. -John 13:1-17

In the above passage, we see Jesus washing his disciples feet. Now, I had always thought the entire purpose of this passage was just to demonstrate how we should serve one another in the Body of Christ, and I still believe that is a portion of its purpose. But the other day, it came to me that this also has to do with keeping each other clean. I am not talking in the physical sense, but spiritually.

The Bible says that the devil will accuse us (Revelation 12:10.) Galatians 6:1 says that we that are spiritual are supposed to restore those who have fallen. So, as I am thinking about all of this in context with the above passage, I think, "Is Jesus saying we are responsible for keeping our brothers "clean" and free from sin?"

Jesus taught them through something physical something spiritual that must take place. Now, this makes the second devotional I have written pertaining to what we say. I need to watch my mouth too. What do you think? Have you been washing your brothers feet today, or have you been doing the opposite and been an accuser?

Every time we remind our brothers and sisters who they are in Christ, we are washing their feet.

Regret Free Parenting: Raise Good Kids and Know Your're Doing it Right

Regret Free Parenting: Raise Good Kids and Know You're Doing it Right ,by author Catherine Hickem,LCSW, is a solid book that will give you additional insight to become the parent God created you to be. Mrs. Hickem has years of experience interacting with parents and children through such roles as a pastor’s wife, school counselor, and most importantly mom. She is the founder of Intentional Moms, a national ministry, devoted to supporting and strengthening mothers.

Written for mothers, this book will be a useful asset in your parenting library. Based upon the premise of parenting with the big picture in mind, Hickem arms you with tools to become the best parent you can be. The foundation of her wisdom is derived from God’s Word, of which God is the author, and He is the ultimate parent. As you read, you will learn how to become an intentional parent, and understand the necessity of being a healthy parent so you can have the confidence and assurance you are making good choices for your children.

I enjoyed this book. It is full of information that will help a mom at any stage in her parenting. That being said, I would recommend reading it with a pen in hand, to underline, make notes, etc. You will want to be able to remember where help specific to you is located, and find it easily. My favorite chapter was probably the last one where she spends a lot of time discussing God in our lives as parents. At the end of the book, you will find a Regret- Free Parenting Plan, as well as some additional resources to help you in your life as an intentional mom. Happy Reading!

Mind Your Own Business Part 2-Judge Not

“Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.” –Matthew 7:1-5(NIV)

This morning I had an argument with my husband. Yes, we had an argument. As we were both storming around the house, in a regular unhealthy manner, the Holy Spirit starting revealing some stuff to me. We were both so irritated with each other, and when it got down to it, it was essentially about the same thing. You see, we were fighting, and both of us were wrong. We both made mistakes. There was no way I could say that I am right and you better fix it, because I was guilty of the same thing too! I really need to fix myself and recognize that I was doing basically the same thing I was mad at him for.

In John chapter 9 we read, “Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, “What? Are we blind too?” Jesus said, “If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin; but now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains."

What Jesus was saying to the Pharisees was that because they said they could see and were aware of sin, they were held accountable for it. You see, if you see somebody doing something you know is not right, you are aware of that being a sin, and you are accountable for not making the same mistake.

That is what is so important about the blood of Jesus. It takes care of every sin, washing it away. You must go to God, and ask for forgiveness, when you make a mistake. It is so easy. 1 John 1:9 says, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

So, mind your own business, take care of your own sin (shortcomings of not being obedient to the Word), and you will be in a much better state spiritually and emotionally.

*Note: I asked my husband before I even starting writing this if he cared if I shared, since he is the head of our home.

Continue In His Word

“So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, ‘If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.’ ” -John 8:31-32(New American Standard Bible)

Our walk with God is sometimes a progression of things. Many people think that if God has heard my prayer the results will always be instant, but Jesus tells us that is not so. Jesus said what will make us free is continuing in His Word. This requires a conscious effort on our part. We have to make the choice that we will continue to do the Word of God. And the results are sometimes so subtle that it is may not be readily seen by the naked human eye. But it is producing results when we do it, say it, and believe it. When we cannot see anything happening yet, this is where faith comes in. We must have faith that God’s Word is so and is producing results when we believe it, speak it, and do it. The things in the supernatural realm are much greater and more real than what we can see. What we can see is subject to change. God’s Word is not. Today I encourage you to keep going. Keep pressing on in God’s Word, in faith. If you don’t see what you are believing for, don’t quit. Don’t give up. Continue on. You faith might just need to grow. And if you don’t know what to believe for, or what God’s Word says on a subject or situation, spend time with Him in His Word today. You won’t be disappointed.

*Note: When a person is saved or born again, that is an instant event. Jesus said in John 3:3, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." Romans 10:13 says, "for WHOEVER WILL CALL ON THE NAME OF THE LORD WILL BE SAVED."

By This

"By this shall all know that ye are disciples of mine, if ye have love amongst yourselves."-John 13:35, Darby Bible Translation

Love. That is how Jesus said that ALL men would know we were following him. Love amongst ourselves. That means love in the Body of Christ, Love amongst other BELIEVERS.

What is "Love?" Well, the Bible says God is love (1 John 4:16.) But what does Love look like? In 1 Corinthians 13, we find a clear definition of what Love should look like. This is what the God's Word Translation says,

Love is patient. Love is kind. Love isn't jealous. It doesn't sing its own praises. It isn't arrogant. It isn't rude. It doesn't think about itself. It isn't irritable. It doesn't keep track of wrongs. It isn't happy when injustice is done, but it is happy with the truth. Love never stops being patient, never stops believing, never stops hoping, never gives up.

Today I want us to think about this defintion of Love in light of our own relationships. Is this what your relationship looks like with your spouse, your children, your parents, your friends, and in light of John 13:35, members of your church or other believers you are friends with?

What Season Are You In?

Ecclesiastes 3:1 “For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.”

When you say the word seasons, people immediately think of spring, summer, winter, and fall. Each of these natural seasons has its own distinct natural purpose. As human beings, it would appear that we all go through seasons in our lives as well. We start out as babies and grow into children, then youth and finally adults. As adults we continue on going through seasons. We might go to college, get married, have children, or marry a man in the military.

Ask and You Shall Receive

This morning I was in the kitchen getting a Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookie out of the freezer. I like them best when they are cold. So, I am eating a cookie when one of my daughters comes in the kitchen and sees me eating the cookie. What do I do? I have only one cookie left and four children. I gave it to the child who came to me. In that moment, I received an illustration of receiving the promises of God. We have to go to Him and ask. We must go to him in faith also believing that what we ask for He will give to us. That child was the only one who received a cookie.

James 4:2 "....You do not have, because you do not ask God."

John 16:24 "Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete."

Hebrews 11:16 "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him."

James 1:6 "But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind."

Luke 18:35-43 "As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. When he heard the crowd going by, he asked what was happening. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.” He called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” Those who led the way rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” Jesus stopped and ordered the man to be brought to him. When he came near, Jesus asked him,“What do you want me to do for you?” “Lord, I want to see,” he replied. Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.” Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus, praising God. When all the people saw it, they also praised God.
